Note: L.L. Corum and Floyd Davis were co-winners in 1926 and 1941 respectively. Both of them started the race in their own car, and at some point during the race, handed the controls over to a relief driver. In Corum's case it was Joe Boyer, and in Davis' case it was Mauri Rose. Both Boyer and Rose would ultimately take their respective cars to the lead, and go on to win those two races. It was commonplace in the years prior to and just after W.W.I.I. to frequently utilize relief drivers. However, seldom did the relief drivers remain in the car for the remainder of the race. Typically the original starting driver would get back in the car to finish the race. Neither Corum nor Davis respectively managed to lead any laps while under control of their cars, and thus were never credited with leading any laps. Neither driver managed to lead any laps during any other races either, thus have zero laps led for their careers. Both were credited as co-winners of their respective races, and have an unusual distinction of no laps led, yet a victory.

Latest Pass for the Lead to Win the Race

(Note that one lap is 2.5 miles, and the race consists of 200 laps)

Approximately 450 feet to the finish line: (2006) Marco Andretti took the white flag and led lap 199. Out of turn four, on the frontstrech of the final lap, Sam Hornish, Jr. passed Andretti and edged him out for the win with approximately 450 feet to the finish line.

Approximately 900 feet to the finish line: (2011) Rookie J.R. Hildebrand took the lead with 3 laps to go while other drivers pitted for fuel. Hidebrand was trying to stretch his fuel to the finish. He took the white flag and led lap 199. He held about a 4-5 second lead. In turn four on the final lap, he came up on the lapped car of Charlie Kimball. Kimball's car ran out of fuel, and slowed. Hildebrand tried to pass Kimball on the outside in turn four, but got up into the "marbles," and slid into the outside wall. His car slid down the frontstretch along the wall towards the finish line. About 900 feet from the line, Dan Wheldon drove by Hildebrand's wrecked car to take the victory. Hildebrand continued to slide down the mainstrecth, and he slid across the finish line to place second.

Approximately 2.8 miles to the finish line: (1999) Robby Gordon led lap 198, and ran out of fuel in turn four on the 199th lap. Kenny Brack passed him for the lead near the entrance to the pit area, went on to officially lead the 199th lap, and completed the final lap for the victory.

Approximately 3.4 miles to the finish line: (1989) Al Unser, Jr. led lap 198, and led Emerson Fittpaldi on backstrech on the 199th lap. In turn three, Fittipaldi passed Unser, Jr. on the inside, the two cars touched wheels, and Unser, Jr. crashed into the outside wall. Fittipaldi continued, taking the white and yellow flags, completed the final lap, and secured the victory.

Approximately 3.5 miles to the finish line: (1915) Ralph DePalma led the 198th lap at which point his car began to fail. Holding a 5½ lap lead over second place, DePalma tried to nurse his car around the final two laps. The car quit shortly afterwards at the north end of the track, near turn three, approximately 1¼-1½ laps from the finish line. Second place Joe Dawson made up the margin, and passed DePalma to take the lead. Dawson officially led the 199th and 200th lap for the victory, the only two laps he ever led. DePalma and his mechanic pushed the car back to the pits.

Approximately 5.1 miles to the finish line:: (1986) Kevin Cogan led Bobby Rahal during a late-race caution. The green flag was set to come back out for a two-lap sprint to the finish. At the head of the mainstrech, the green came out and Rahal darted past Cogan, slipping by him before they crossed the start/finish line, a move that was legal under the rules of the time, and Rahal was actually credited with leading the 198th lap. He streched out his lead, and the next time by took the white flag to lead lap 199, and went on to complete lap 200 for the win. His lap 200 speed of 209.192 mph was the fastest lap ever run during the race at the time. His lap 199 speed, incidently, was over 204 mph.

Approximately 7.3 miles to the finish line:: (1961) Eddie Sachs was leading A.J. Foyt late in the race when tire wear forced him to pit. He pulled into the pits, leading the 197th lap, but as he waited for his tires to be changed, A.J. Foyt flew past him to take the lead. Foyt led laps 198, 199, and 200 to take his first victory.

Approximately 7.7 miles to the finish line:: (1967) Parnelli Jones dominated the race in the Turbine, leading after 196 laps. On the 197th lap, Jones slowed in turn four coasting to a stop at the entrance to the pit area. A.J. Foyt blew by, officially leading the 197th lap, and going on to complete the final three to secure the win.

Lap Leaders: Careers

Drivers That Have Led All 200 Possible Laps in Their Career

The Indianapolis 500-mile race consists of 200 laps, around the 2.5 mile Speedway (200 Laps = 500 miles). No driver has ever led all 200 laps in one race, but five times a driver has led more than 190. Twenty-five drivers have led more than 200 laps in their career of several races. A number of them have managed to lead all 200 individual laps possible at one time or another in their respective careers.

Note: Laps led listed below refer to the first time the driver led that particular lap in their career. In many cases, the driver led that individual lap several more times after that point in their career.

Ralph DePalma was the first to complete this feat, in 1919.

  • He led laps 3-198 in 1912.
  • Laps 199-200 were led during his 1915 victory.
  • Laps 1-2 were led during the 1919 race.

Bill Vukovich is the only driver to accomplish the feat in only two years of leading laps. Incidently, Vukovich led all but laps 49-53 of the 1953 race, all of which he had already led the year before.

  • Laps 7-11, 13-61, 83-134, 148-191 were led during the 1952 race.
  • Laps 1-6, 12, 62-82, 135-147 were among the laps led during his 1953 victory.

Parnelli Jones completed the feat during the 1967 race.

  • Laps 1-59, 65-125 were led during the 1962 race.
  • Laps 60-63, 126-200 were led during his 1963 victory.
  • Lap 64 was finally led during the 1967 race.

Al Unser, Sr. completed the feat during the 1979 race.

  • Lap 2 was led during the 1965 race.
  • Laps 6-51 were led during the 1969 race.
  • Laps 3-5, laps 52-54 were led during the 1974 race, giving him 199 out of the 200 possible individual laps led.
  • When he led the opening lap of the 1982 race (he actually led the first 22), the only time he led the first lap of any Indy 500, he completed the feat of leading all 200 possible laps of the race. The 1982 race was also the final in which Foyt would lead any laps.

Mario Andretti completed the feat in 1987.
