Eligibility: Candidates cannot be nominated until at least twenty years after the first date of active participation in professional-level auto racing. Winners must receive 75 percent of the votes of a rougly 150-member panel of racing officials, living Hall of Fame Members, and media representatives. Voting is held usually in Feburary or March, and members are inducted about a week or two before the race. There is no set number of inductees for each year, and the number varies annually.

Eligibility: Candidates can be nominated after five years of retirement from active participation, effective April 30th of each year. Deceased candidates can be nominated five years following death, effective April 30. Nominees have fifteen years of voting eligibility, after which he/she must wait five additional years before becoming eligible to be voted in through the Old Timers Committee. Nominees must receive 51% of votes of executive committee to become member. Inductees are typically announced in conjunction with the NASCAR Sprint Cup event at Talladega Superspeedway held in late April or early May.

Inductees receive the prestigious "Horsepower" award, an original bronze statuette created by sculptor Michael Curtis.
